Plans for a large scale rabbit farm in Mylor Bridge have been refused, a decision made late last week.

A temporary rural workers dwelling was planned with an agricultural building built to enable the establishment of a free-range rabbit breeding and rearing "enterprise".

The proposal put forward the development of a 250 doe, free-range rabbit production unit over the next three years.

The application received 336 comments, with 335 objections, with objections from organisations such as PETA and Rabbit Farm Resistance UK.

Speaking on the plans, PETA said recently:

"PETA is calling for this plan to be scrapped, sparing scores of gentle rabbits a lifetime of suffering and an agonising death."

Upon refusal, Cornwall Council's planning department stated:

"The proposal would incur significant visual harm to the

immediate setting and surrounding natural environment from the construction of a dwelling and agricultural building in the open countryside resulting in landscape and visual harm to the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

"Notwithstanding the modest associated economic benefits of this proposal, they do not outweigh the unsustainable location and harm to the natural qualities of the setting."

The proposed location of this development was judged to encourage conflict between pedestrians and motorised traffic giving rise to increased danger for all users and creating an unacceptable highway safety impact.

"The submitted information is insufficient to enable the Local Planning Authority to assess the impacts on protected species and does not provide any information in relation to Biodiversity Net Gain," Cornwall Council added.

The proposal conflicted with the Cornwall Neighbourhood Plan on numerous counts.
