After last year's successful Run Mawnan event, Falmouth Rotary Club has now distributed some of the charity money raised to organisations in the village.

At Mawnan VA School last week Rod Allday, the organiser of the event, presented cheques to representatives of three village organisations sharing a total of £900.

Zinnia Swanzy, a parent at the school and the landscape architect behind the school's gardening club, received £500 towards the cost of new fencing around the school's nature garden.

Established in 2020, the garden is a place where the children can feel inspired by the wonders of nature and enjoy the rewarding experience of gardening.

From making compost to nurturing seedlings, the garden is a hive of hands-on activities, where children can roll up their sleeves and get stuck into the natural world. It also provides a relaxing, peaceful space where children and adults can talk, read and share together, improving everyone's mental health and well-being.

Malcolm Dearnley, on behalf of Mawnan Bowling Club, received £120 to pay for new white jacks, which will benefit players with visual impairment who find this colour more visible than yellow jacks.

Ian Newman received £280 for Mawnan Church towards the cost of rebuilding the ancient Grade II Listed Lych gate. The structure has had to be dismantled on safety grounds and the donation will go towards the rebuilding appeal.

For the Rotary Club, Rod Allday said, 'Our Run Mawnan event is one of the main fund-raising events in our calendar. Over the years it has grown to be an important community event in the village and we receive a lot of help from residents in the staging of the event.

"We always aim to distribute within the village half of the monies raised and it is great to see such worthy recipients of these funds. This year's event will be on Sunday 1st October, with the usual 1-mile children's fun run and 5k and 10k road races, so there is something for everyone, either to take part or come along and enjoy the atmosphere on the day."

Falmouth Rotary Club welcomes new members of all ages and genders. Anyone interested in finding out more about the club is invited to contact the club secretary via the Greenbank Hotel and to attend one of the club's regular lunches held at the hotel each Monday.
