On Saturday Falmouth RFC welcome Penryn RFC to The Recreation Ground for the first derby match of the season between the two sides in the Tribute Western Counties West League.

The last time the two teams met in the league was the 2016/17 season when the Eagles won 13-10 at home and 24-6 away on their way to being crowned champions of the Cornwall/Devon League.

Falmouth captain, Tom Spiller, said:

"My first taste of a rugby match v Penryn was Boxing day 2004 as a 17-year-old when we were plying our trade-in Cornwall/Devon whilst Penryn were three leagues higher in South West 1.

"I would get my first league game against Penryn in the 08/09 season as Penryn came down from Western Counties League looking to bounce straight back up, this they did. Beating Falmouth 60-8 and 50-3 that year.

"We would not meet again in the league until the infamous 16/17 season."

Penryn come into this fixture in eighth position in the league, and Falmouth sit in tenth place.

Tom Spiller added: "The boys are upbeat and looking forward to the game. Boys are competing for places in the first team and it is good that we can push each other in this way.

"It is good to see Penryn in WCW (Western Counties West) again but we are treating and preparing for this game as we would any other in the league. At the end of the day, there are 5 points to be had and that's our target."
