Resident shares disappointment after Beryl Bike stop removed due to complaints
A man from Falmouth has taken to social media after discovering his local Beryl Bike stop has been removed due to complaints from residents.
The e-bike scheme has proven to be popular in the Dutchy, back in February statistics showed that Cornwall's Beryl e-bike users have covered the distance of Penzance to Thailand.
Earlier this month the latest statistics showed that over 8,000 journeys were made in April, the first full month Beryl e-bikes have been available in Newquay, Truro, and St Austell after already being in place in areas like Falmouth.
But not everyone is a fan of the bikes and now a number of complaints have led to a stop in Falmouth being removed.
On Wednesday (17th May), Andrew Lancaster posted on a Falmouth community Facebook group after he discovered the reasons for the stop being removed, on his post he said: "I live in Boslowick area. Yesterday the Beryl bike stop got removed. After some enquiries I find out it was because of residents complaining? This was a really useful service used by many around this area. The nearest one now is over 20 mins walk away.
"It just seems really small-minded and pushing positive progress backwards. As a regular user, this will have an effect on me as I'm sure it will others. Again it seems the minority rule over the majority."
The post has so far received 79 comments, with many supporting Andrew and unsure why people would complain. However, some comments made did reference that bikes had been dumped and they were unsure if the pavement was the best place.
Dean Evans, a Falmouth Town Councillor for the Boslowick area commented on the post to try and clear up what had happened, he said: "I initially asked Beryl Bikes for a location in Boslowick. There has been some issues with a build-up of bikes there and it seems it has led to complaints.
"It's unfortunate that they have decided to remove the location but I am trying to get an agreement for an alternative. With the removal of the unlocking fee, the bikes are now more affordable."
Councillor Evans also added that anyone unhappy with the removal, could contact Beryl Bikes and let them know by emailing: [email protected]
