Residents have expressed their delight after Falmouth Grammar School, Tregenver Road, was granted a grade II status.

Historic England said the building has significant architectural and historic interest.

This has been a long term project for local group Save Our Falmouth with hours of work being put in to get the status.

After a closer look at the building, it was deemed the school had significant history and a close connection with those who attended.

Previous attempts to list the building came in 1992 and 2001, with no luck until now.

"As a group we strongly support the long term future of the towns historic building," a spokesperson said.

In a concluding statement, Historic England wrote:

"A well-composed school built in good quality, locally distinctive materials, now known to have been designed by a significant Cornish architect.

"It has special architectural and historic interest and is recommended for listing at Grade II."

Great news for the town, and Save Our Falmouth.

Local residents were understandably delighted with the decision, one commented:

"Brilliant that's excellent news, well done everyone."

A second added:

"So pleased you saved a piece of history with so many emotionless new projects taking over the town."
