Plans to shift entire villages into different Parliamentary constituencies have come under fire from local councillors who are encouraging residents to make their views known.

The Boundary Commission for England (BCE) is currently undertaking a review of Parliamentary constituency boundaries in what is known as the 2023 review.

While the new proposals have dispensed with the controversial idea of a Devonwall constituency which would have sat on the border of Devon and Cornwall there are plans to move some villages into different constituencies.

Among the most controversial is the plan to move Threemilestone and Chacewater out of the Truro and Falmouth constituency and into the Camborne and Redruth constituency.

Similarly, the plans to take Roche and Bugle out of the St Austell and Newquay constituency and move them into the South East Cornwall constituency have also attracted concerns.

The BCE has proposed dividing Kenwyn parish which sits west of Truro which would mean the Gloweth ward would be in Truro and Falmouth while the Shortlanesend would be in Camborne and Redruth.

Local councillors have suggested that the Threemilestone and Chacewater division should be moved back into Truro and Falmouth due to the links the areas have with Truro including schools and other local services.

To offset the change of moving Threemilestone and Chacewater back into Truro and Falmouth it has been suggested that the Constantine, Mabe and Mawnan division should move from Truro and Falmouth into Camborne and Redruth.

Doing this would ensure that the constituency electorates would remain within the ranges which have been set by the Government.

Dulcie Tudor, Cornwall councillor, for the Threemilestone and Chacewater area, said:

"I cannot fathom what reasonable justification there can be to move the villages of Threemilestone and Chacewater into the Parliamentary Constituency of Camborne/Redruth. It's ridiculous.

"Both villages fall within my Cornwall Council Division. Both village schools feed not Richard Lander Secondary. Threemilestone industrial estate is an employment and business area for Truro. The Stadium for Cornwall is planned to be home for Truro City Football Club. I could go on.

"The feedback I've had so far confirms my view that people in Threemilestone consider themselves to live in a satellite suburb to Truro.

"So I fully support an alternative proposal to keep Threemilestone and Chacewater (electoral division) ward in Truro and Falmouth, and to move Constantine, Mawnan & Budock ward to the Camborne and Redruth constituency."

Cllr Tudor highlighted that people only have until August 2 to give their comments to the BCE on the proposals and urged them to do so.

In relation to Roche and Bugle the BCE has suggested they move from St Austell and Newquay and into South East Cornwall.

However local councillors have highlighted that both villages are a major part of Clay Country, the majority of which sits in the St Austell and Newquay constituency.

Councillors have already submitted their request to change the plans to the BCE and it is believed that this is supported by Cornwall Council.

To offset the change they have suggested that the St Columb Major, St Mawgan and St Wenn division should move from St Austell and Newquay into the North Cornwall constituency.

That move has been supported by local councillors who highlight that St Columb Major was previously part of the North Cornwall constituency before the last boundary review which took place before the 2010 General Election.

Cornwall Council's constitution and governance committee is set to hold an extraordinary meeting on July 27 to draw up a response to the proposed changes.

To see all the proposed boundary changes and to comment on them go to the BCE consultation website.

All comments must be received by August 2nd.
