New Falmouth business aims to lower the number of candles taken to landfill

A Falmouth resident has set up a new business which sells homemade candles from the repurposed wax waste of bars and restaurants.

Kia-Vanna Harrison, the creator of Kiandles, wants to reduce the number of candles that end up in bins across the county.

For the past year, she has been collecting waste wax from establishments across Cornwall and turning them into repurposed candles to sell on.

Kia wants to get as many local businesses, primarily restaurants and bars, sharing their wax waste as possible.

Kia told Nub News:

"Kiandles are important to me because not only has it opened my eyes to the tones of wax that gets thrown out, but I really love the art and skill behind it creating unique colours and scents and moulds.

"Bars such as the Penny Come Quick have been donating wax to me for just over a year now and when I go to collect the wax the staff who are on shift are often astonished by the amount of wax given as usually it would be thrown away, and this is something that no one is really thinking about as they don't have bins for wax like they would for plastic and cardboard.

"That being said I aim to provide a local business with wax bins which I will collect once every month or so, cleaning and separating the different types of wax ensuring none of that wax will end up in landfill.

"Paraffin wax which I have found is the widest donated is a byproduct of oil, which means it can take decades to decompose once entering a landfill.

"By the end of 2020 I would like to involve as many people and business as possible so we can reduce the number of candles that end up in our bins, but also so we can send as many little cactus out to the world as a reminder that you can help take care of this planet and all the plants and animals on it."
