Over the weekend volunteers from Greenpeace Falmouth and Penryn took action at Tesco Metro, Falmouth.
The group has called upon the UK's largest supermarket to stop buying meat and dairy from companies involved in destroying the Amazon and to halve the amount of meat it sells by 2025 to protect people, wildlife and the climate.
Large posters of the Amazon in flames appeared on the shop front of Tesco Metro, Killigrew Street with the bold message, "Tesco, stop selling meat linked to forest destruction."
The posters encourage the public to sign a petition which calls on the new Tesco CEO, Ken Murphy to take action.
One volunteer from Goldenbank, who wished to remain anonymous said:
"Greenpeace Falmouth and Penryn volunteers have put these posters over the windows of the Killigrew Street Tesco to expose the link between industrial meat and rainforest destruction.
"The Amazon is more than 5000 miles away, but the products of rainforest destruction are in our local supermarket and on unsuspecting people's dinner plates. Tesco should be setting a good example to consumers and not supporting companies like JBS who are destroying massively important ecosystems in the Amazon."
Tesco promised to end its part in deforestation for commodities by 2020, but in 2018 it changed that goal to 2025 and has yet to publish a plan as to how this will be achieved.
Anna Jones, head of forests, Greenpeace UK, said:
"Our future depends on us eating less meat and dairy and more plant-based food. This way, we could feed more people with all the calories and nutrition needed for a healthy diet without destroying forests.
"Tesco's CEO knows we need to eat less meat and dairy to protect forests and stop climate breakdown. And yet the supermarket sells more of it than any other UK company and continues to buy from suppliers owned by Amazon destroyers.
"Other UK supermarkets and fast food companies are also guilty of churning out the industrial meat that's fuelling deforestation including Sainsbury's, Asda, Burger King, KFC and McDonald's. But as the biggest by far, Tesco must lead the way."
