Plans to build a new house overlooking Penryn River have been granted planning permission.

An application to build the two-storey house in St Peters Road, Flushing, went before Cornwall Council's central sub-area planning committee yesterday (Mon).

Planning officers had recommended the plans for approval saying that the social and economic benefits of the development weighed in its favour.

The planned home would be in an "upside-down" layout with two of the bedrooms on the ground floor and the living space on the upper first floor with an en-suite master bedroom.

However, the plans, which include an integrated garage and carport, had been objected to by Mylor Parish Council and Cornwall councillor for the area John Symons.

They said it would be overdevelopment of the site and also raised concerns that the modern design of the house would have an impact on the view from the river.

Concerns were also raised by the parish council about the new property overlooking neighbours and that there is restricted access to the site.

And there were concerns that the site is within an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and that the new home would not enhance it.

But applicant Rob Rimmington told the committee that he had worked with planning officers to amend the plans after initial concerns were raised about the designs.

He also said he had held meetings with the parish council where it invited comments and again amended the plans in response.

Committee member Chris Batters proposed that the application should be approved as recommended by planning officers.

He said: "I appreciate the concerns but quite truthfully I have seen far more hideous designs over at Polzeath, Rock and places like that.

"I think it is a very good design and I can't see any good reason to refuse it."

However fellow committee member Malcolm Brown raised concerns that the support shown by councillors was not reflecting the concerns raised by residents and the parish council. He said he could not support the recommendation.

When the proposal to approve the plans was put to the vote it was carried with seven votes in favour and six against.
