Students sign petition following accusations of racism and discrimination at Falmouth University

By The Editor 16th Sep 2021

Falmouth students have been signing and sharing a petition following accusations that Falmouth University has shown a lack of support for BAME students and ignored multiple reports of racism and discrimination.

Mei-Li, a Falmouth student going into her third year, has spoken on social media about her experience:

"Falmouth University has been absolutely horrendous in its treatment towards students of colour."

"Earlier this year I was called the N-word by someone who works in one of the local food places.

"When I spoke to the university about it I was told 'just because one person says the N-word doesn't mean everyone's going to say it'

"When I spoke to living support I was told I was 'presumptuous' for saying that there was a problem in Cornwall with racism and the university should do more to combat it."

On social media also, someone who would prefer to stay anonymous wrote about an old school friend who committed suicide after an alleged three years of bullying while working at the Uni.

Over six hundred people have shown support for a social media post calling for the University to address this claim.

"The university now needs to be held responsible for their silence, we want answers," said the petition's organiser.

A new Instagram account named 'falexunitruth' has started posting messages from students telling the stories of times they have reported incidents to the university and allegedly been ignored.

Some international students have claimed that during the enrolment process they were made to submit their passport multiple times despite owning a UK passport.

A few international students have also said they had to take an English test, despite the University knowing they were already attending an English school.

The new petition holds a list of demands which students say will, "close the racial gap and indeed prove that Falmouth is more than just a 'positively engaging' institution for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion."

Some of the demands:

  • Decolonise the curriculum by further incorporating BAME scholars and practitioners into study material, ask that all teaching staff are actively involved in the research of existing and emerging black academics, creatives and practitioners.
  • Increase the number of BAME staff to 30% and ensure they are qualified and not just hired because of their race.
  • Increase the number of BAME staff in leadership roles to 30% and ensure they are qualified and not just hired because of their race.
  • In Falmouth University's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Reports, disclose the statistical information of the specific numbers of black students and staff.
  • Disclose statistical information on the BAME pay gap and take necessary steps to close this gap.
  • Show solidarity with black students and staff by making a public donation to the Black Lives Matter movement and funds that allow black people from disadvantaged backgrounds to have access to the arts.
  • Implement mandatory face-to-face anti-racism, racial diversity and cultural and racial sensitivity training for staff at the beginning of each academic year and for students upon enrolment.

Falmouth University has not yet responded to any of the criticism they are receiving and Falmouth Nub News has approached them for a comment.
