Cornwall and climate change: an in-depth discussion

On Thursday evening some of Cornwall's biggest voices in climate change came together to discuss the progress being made in the county.

The meeting was held at All Saints Church, Truro, with the evening being hosted by Reverend Jeremy Putnam.

On the panel was Cornwall Councillor for Falmouth Smithick, Jayne Kirkham. Social entrepreneur and member of Extinction Rebellion, Manda Brookman and Luci Isaacson, founder of Climate Vision.

Tracey Dockree, founder of the blog and magazine Ethical Rebel shared her thoughts on the fashion industry.

There was entertainment from Megan Chapman, award-winning rap artist and poet. Helston based poet, novelist and screenwriter Froshie also performed pieces of her work.

Jayne Kirkham said: "This is something that came to Cornwall Council at the start of this year, there were rumblings about climate change and a climate emergency.

"We had a meeting at the start of this year and Cornwall Council declared a climate emergency.

"We have ended up becoming the largest rural authority to declare a climate change emergency, we are streaks ahead of any other parts of the country, that is really exciting and it created a domino effect.

"As well as what we are looking at what we can do on a Cornwall wide scale, Falmouth Town, Penryn Town and Mabe Parish Council are all looking at what they can do more locally, that is fantastic and amazing.

"30% of our energy now comes from renewables and we have had a 19% carbon footprint drop since 2011 so things have slowly been getting better, I feel like there is a kickstart down here."

Manda Brookman said: "We are currently in the worst of times and the best of times, there is no doubt that the news from scientists is as bad as I have ever known it.

"If as human beings we only get up when we absolutely have too, now is looking like one of those times. I have never known as much activation and I have never known as many people step up to this."

She added: "To summarise the climate situation (looking at the UK and globally), it is really really bad."

A way that is suggested to help cut carbon emissions is with Climate Visions ten pledges, a series of tasks to reduce our carbon footprint. Luci Isaacson explained more: "I got told to cut carbon, get people ready, I have devoted all my work to that since. It is not just climate science but how do you change peoples thinking into action. So we formulated the ten pledges.

"The way the ten pledges are worded and the way they are ordered is incredibly important, it doesn't say you must be a vegan etc, but a lot of them lead to some of these things and a lot of them have long-lasting effects."
