A Falmouth shopkeeper has been presented with gifts as the community rallies behind her following racial abuse.
Haidi Ocampo, from the Philippines, was forced to close The Corner Shop on Berkeley Vale recently after the abuse had become so bad.
They do some amazing work including providing hot meals for those in need, on Christmas day when everything else is closed. She will provide food and a hot drink to anyone who asks her. All the food that is beyond its 'best before' date she donates to local food larders, such as the one at the Dracaena Centre, who provide it to those people who are in need. They also buy warm clothing for those living on the streets in winter from their own pockets.
The fundraising total came to £823 - with £481.12 going towards the Dracaena Centre's community larder.
Organiser Nicki said: "Nicola and I had a chat about what to do with the money. We want Haidi to benefit directly from the funds - that's why people donated - but also want to respect her wishes; she has so little time for herself so it's hard for her to take time away from running the shop and caring for her partner. So we've decided to split the money between a few treats for Haidi and a donation to The Dracaena Centre's community larder."
Haidi was presented with the gifts and a card yesterday (3rd), the box of treats contained three massage sessions at the Wellness Hub. A two-course Sunday lunch for two at St Michael's Hotel. Two Lush gift sets and a Cornish food hamper from The Cornish Store.
Nicki added: "She was overwhelmed at the generosity of everyone. She is so thankful to be part of a community that appreciates her kindness and generosity. In true Haidi spirit, she asked that all the money goes to a food charity to help feed hungry families. We compromised and bought her a few gifts so she had a few treats but will donate the remaining funds to The Dracaena Centre's community food larder. Thank you to everyone who either donated or sent kind words about her."
One of the comments in the card read: "You always greet me with a warm smile even on the rainiest days. The beating heart of the community, thank you."
A second read: "We are all with you Haidi."
