Fundraiser set up after Falmouth shopkeeper racially abused
A Falmouth shop was forced to close over the weekend after the owner was subject to "awful racist abuse" by a customer.
In a post on social media Haidi Ocampo, from the Philippines was upset and shocked by the incident which occurred on Saturday (14th) at The Corner Shop, Berkeley Vale.
The abuse has become so bad it is said she could decide "enough is enough."
In response to the abuse, customers Nicki Sweeney and Nicola Congdon have set up a GoFundMe page to buy Haidi a gift to show their support for her and the community work she does alongside her partner Bill.
Some of the work they do includes providing hot meals for those in need, such as on Christmas day when everything else is closed. She will provide food and a hot drink to anyone who asks her. All the food that is beyond its 'best before' date she donates to local food larders, such as the one at the Dracaena Centre, who provide it to those people who are in need. They also buy warm clothing for those living on the streets in winter from their own pockets.
The fundraiser reads:
"We are all shocked and horrified that Haidi is treated so badly by a small minority of racists, and want to show her that she is welcome and she is loved by the town community.
"We would like to raise some money to buy Haidi a gift to show her that we appreciate all that she does for Falmouth and to show her that we stand by her."
