The Member of Parliament for Truro & Falmouth has spoken to Nub News following Cornwall's securing of new government funding.
Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick yesterday (16 July 2020) confirmed allocations for individual councils from the £500 million of additional support for coronavirus-related spending pressures.
The funding will help councils in England continue to deliver crucial frontline services, support those most in need and meet new spending pressures so they can deliver for residents.
The extra £500 million – which brings support for pressures they are facing to £4.3 billion - will be distributed to councils based on population and levels of deprivation, and how the costs of delivery of services vary across the country.
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have received over £4.9 million in this third tranche of additional Covid-19 funding. Since the start of the pandemic, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have received over £39million of additional Covid-19 funding.
In the South West as a whole, councils have received over £360million of additional Covid-19 funding overall.
Cherilyn Mackrory told Nub News:
"I am pleased to see that the Government has given another £4,968,819 to Cornwall Council to support it through the COVID-19 pandemic."
"This is part of an additional £500million for local councils that was announced earlier this month, and I look forward to seeing the money drawn and spent sensibly in the next few weeks."
The funding is part of a comprehensive package of government support to help councils respond to the pandemic, including an unprecedented new scheme to help councils recover lost income, including from car parks and museums, which have been shut during the lockdown.
