Last week Nub News reported that the government had announced a new multi-million-pound sewage system investment for Falmouth as part of a wider £1.6 billion investment brought forward to speed up vital water infrastructure projects.

One of the major projects was South West Water upgrading assets and storage to reduce discharges in Falmouth and Sidmouth which would see £70 million worth of investment.

Falmouth Nub News reached out to both Cherilyn Mackrory MP for Truro & Falmouth and Jayne Kirkham a Falmouth Councillor and Labour Parliamentary candidate for Truro & Falmouth for a comment.

Although Cherilyn did not respond directly she did comment through a blog on her website that said: "Following Ofwat's announcement earlier this week I am delighted to see confirmation of these plans and multi-million-pound investment from South West Water into the sewage infrastructure around the Fal."

"These works are clearly needed and I am pleased to see South West Water recognise that fact and prioritise them for delivery."

"I look forward to meeting South West Water to discuss the detail and see for myself how these works will make a positive difference for people living around and working on the Fal."

Jayne Kirkham told Nub News: "It's good news for Falmouth that progress is being made on some sewage outlets - most likely because the campaign here against sewage spills has been so vocal and it has affected our visitor economy as well as our fishing waters. However, it only affects a tiny number of combined sewage outlets out of hundreds across Cornwall, and other areas will see no benefit.

"For example, we have all seen the pictures of the brown water at St Agnes, and that will not be helped by this. We need a massive move to clean up our waters and Parliament to vote for shadow Labour DEFRA secretary Jim McMahon's Water Quality (Sewage Discharge) Bill which he published last week.

"The Bill, as Labour's plan to end the Tory sewage scandal by 2030, seeks to deliver four key outcomes:

• Setting a legal requirement for the monitoring of all sewage outlets and penalties for failures in adhering to monitoring requirements.

• Imposing automatic fines for sewage dumping.

• Implementing a legally binding target to reduce sewage dumping events.

• A requirement for the Secretary of State to publish a strategy for the reduction of sewage discharges and regular economic impact assessments.

"The Bill provides a clear plan to end the systematic corner-cutting and sewage dumping into our natural environment. The Government now has the opportunity to support the Bill and provide for Parliamentary time to ensure that it passes into law. I hope our Cornish MPs in particular will vote for it."
