The group Cornwall Resists has scheduled a public meeting and started fundraising to help organise more protests over the migrant barge.

As most of you will be aware, on the 9th of May a barge named Bibby Stockholm arrived in Falmouth to be refitted and refurbished before heading to Portland Port in Dorset in the next few weeks where it will accommodate about 500 single adult males whilst their asylum claims are processed.

Many people have voiced their opinions on the barge with some saying it's a sensible option while others believe it's inhumane and labelled the boat as a 'floating prison'.

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick said: "We have to use alternative accommodation options, as our European neighbours are doing – including the use of barges and ferries to save the British taxpayer money and to prevent the UK becoming a magnet for asylum shoppers in Europe."

Jayne Kirkham, the labour parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth also weighed in on issue, she said: "The ship currently waiting in the port of Falmouth to be refitted to house approximately 500 people seeking asylum is a hulking reminder of the government's complete failure to process asylum claims in a timely and humane way.

"It's hard to see how detaining more people won't make the problem worse and putting them on ships or in disused army camps is a desperate way to proceed. The ship that is currently in Falmouth will be moved to Dorset after the refit and moored there.

As well as the reaction from politicians and councillors there were also protests organised in both Falmouth and Dorset. Cornwall Resists a coalition of radical groups formed from Resist G7 has supported all three protests over Bibby Stockholm which took place on land and water.

The group has now taken to social media to look for financial support, and to promote a public meeting they will be holding at the Cornish Bank tomorrow evening (Thursday 8th June) at 7 pm.

On the GoFundMe site where the group is looking to raise £500, they said: "We've made it clear that we will not be passive while one of our towns is used to perpetrate racist border violence. And we've shouted loudly that refugees are welcome here.

"But we want and need to do more than shouting. Our resistance needs to be bigger and better on both land and on sea - and this costs money!!

"It's also unlikely that this will be the last such ship to be refurbished in Falmouth. The government has indicated that there are other floating prisons that are likely to arrive in the near future.

"We're planning a sustained campaign to ensure that the UK state regrets its decision to ever send these vessels to our community in Kernow."
