Parliamentary Candidate for Truro & Falmouth Jennifer Forbes has backed plans for a circuit breaker lockdown, saying the government should act now to avoid longer-term implications.
Jennifer said she thinks this is the "only option" we have after the failure of the track and trace system.
Speaking to Julie Scantlebury on the BBC Radio Cornwall breakfast show on Sunday, Jennifer said:
"The independent sage committee has suggested, even the government advisers are admitting we should have gone into a circuit breaker lockdown already.
"We know from last time, every single moment we delay makes it much harder to get back out of so when you have the leading scientists saying we should do this circuit breaker I think we should.
"It is obvious that you act earlier to save lives if you want to. Although we obviously have to look at the economy, you can reboot an economy you can't reboot a person and I think we really should be prioritising that more."
Switching her attention to other countries, Jennifer said the government could learn from New Zealand as they only recorded 60 deaths, "let's close the borders, let's stop people moving, let's test everyone on entry," she said.
On the economic fallout, Jennifer added:
"Our previous experience of lockdown shows that if you wait too long to act the economic impact is greater.
"If you stop this growth now we could have a short sharp circuit breaker lockdown that could nip it in the bud again because otherwise, we will go into another long lockdown. I am dreading it, I don't want another lockdown."
