The world tuned in for final hurrah of Penryn-created NHS sing-along

By The Editor 16th Sep 2021

The Penryn duo who created the Cornish sing-along accompanying the NHS clap hosted their final celebration last night to a viewership of thousands.

Shelley Peters and Rachel Gerred-Hart created the Voices Of The Borough page to bring people together all over Cornwall to sing a song in unison after taking part in the Clap For Carers celebrations.

For the last ten weeks, Will Keating of the Oggymen has been leading the sing-along via live stream to an audience of thousands each week.

On the final hurrah last night, four thousand viewers tuned in to see Will Keating and John Dowling give forty-five minutes of singing, clapping and celebrations. The live stream is now sitting at over seven thousand viewers and still growing.

'Cornwall My Home' written by Harry Glasson has been sung throughout Cornwall and the world every Thursday since the movement began.

Rachel Gerred-Hart told Nub News:

"This has been an emotional experience and one I wouldn't hesitate to repeat. I feel immense pride in Cornwall, Cornish folk and Friends of Cornwall.

"It reminded us that we are working together as one voice in this hour not just for key workers but for each other.

"From what I have seen people are going to continue to go out on a Thursday but not necessarily to clap but catch up with each other and check they are okay. That's the biggest thing for me to come out with on how it's affected the community. People who never spoke on one street now do. "

Rachel says that the page will not be closing down and the duo will continue to think of community-focused ideas, much like their majorly successful Virtual VE Day.

Rachel continued: "This is only the closure of one crazy era of our lives. Voices isn't over. We will be coming up with other ideas and the page will continue.

"People feel safe on our page and supported. Some are posting who never have before and I love that. It's been an incredible experience that will become part of Cornish History."

Shelley Peters told Nub News:

"Looking back on the last ten weeks is actually mind-blowing, seeing how many people joined us through Wills link brings home how united we actually are.

"We have made friends through the group that we might never have made. I know lots of people want the group to continue and have said they are going to continue to go outside and check in with neighbours so I think there has been a massive impact in uniting communities, so maybe not an end but a new beginning."
