What can Falmouth and Penryn expect from VIRTUAL VE Day tomorrow?

By The Editor 16th Sep 2021

Falmouth and Penryn will tomorrow be celebrating VE Day in very strange circumstances.

With everyone in lockdown, it is making it difficult for us to feel connected as a community.

This is why Penryn duo Rachel Gerrad-Hart and Shelly Peters have organised a VIRTUAL VE Day off the back of their successful viral group 'Voices of the Borough'.

The star-studded day has been planned meticulously to bring fun and VE Day celebration to the homes of isolated people around Cornwall.

"In days of war people couldn't travel, couldn't go see families, food was rationed, kids couldn't go out and play, limited access to doctors and medicines. It's not unlike our situation today," Co-organiser Rachel said.

VIRTUAL VE DAY GARDEN PARTY LINE UP:

14:55 - Welcome and Act of Remembrance in line with 'The Nations Toast'

15:00 - Live stream with Royal British Legion Standard Bearer, Matt Barringer.

15:15 - 15:30 - Live set from Andy 'The Crooner' Marshall

16:00 - 16:30 - Will Keating to perform live from his home in Falmouth and announce the winners of the competitions.

The duo is asking people to dress up in their best 30s and 40s fancy dress.

'Show us your bunting' is seeing residents putting up bunting across their home and garden to commemorate the special occasion.

A prize for the best bunting has been supplied by Metalkraft as well as a FLIGHT OVER CORNWALL for two - three people which was donated by Carl Beardmore.

A VE Day cake competition is being held using war style ingredients - many photos have already been uploaded onto social media, lots of incredible baking already!

Laura Jane, the mother of Lewis who has entered the competition, told Nub News:

"Lewis has learnt about VE Day as part of his home learning this week so he decided to make a Union Jack cake.

"We plan to have our own little tea party tomorrow in the garden."

Another competition includes the best Commemorative Gas Mask Box decor. Instructions on how to build these can be found on the Facebook page.

The cake bake and gas mask box competition each have three prizes on offer - three Amazon vouchers with a first prize worth £75.

LHW Lettings and Penryn & Falmouth Funeral Directors are supplying the prizes.

The duo announced recently that the event would be appearing on BBC's The One Show, which means anyone who uploads photos and videos of their fancy dress, bunting and cakes could be seen on the national BBC One program.
