"You don't know what you have got until it's gone": Falmouth pub on life since lockdown

A family-run Falmouth pub which closed its doors in response to the virus has spoken to Nub News about the change of pace in their business.

The Seaview Inn, which closed on March 20th, has been running a takeaway food and alcohol service to keep business going during lockdown.

Michael Oliver, Landlord at the Seaview Inn described how the pub has always been community-based with loyal customers, which has made closing even harder.

"Since lockdown the word to describe it would be weird. Every day seems strange walking into the pub and seeing it so barren," Michael told Nub News.

The food and drinks service has been going well with a consistent offering of different themed evenings: Fish and Chip Fridays, Spicy Saturdays and Roast Dinner Sundays.

Michael Oliver continued: "We are doing takeaway food and beer, predominantly at the weekends, but it is odd when people come in to collect for them to not stay and to not really be able to engage with them for any length of time.

"When the weather is like this the pub should be full up out the front with people enjoying a cool pint or one of our eighty-odd gins with a tonic of their choice."

Despite the missing of regular pub life, Michael remains looking at the positives of living in Falmouth during these strange times.

"Obviously it's hard seeing it like this but we have to remember how fortunate we are in this part of the country and let's face it, we couldn't be in a better place," he said.

Just like many people in town, Michael remains sceptical on when and if things will go back to normal.

He told us: "To be honest I have very little idea what to expect when we reopen. My hope is that we could return to what we were but in reality, I think there will be baby steps and a gradual build-up to previous business levels."

"Never has the saying that you don't know what you have got until it's gone been more prevalent."
