Falmouth Town manager Andrew Westgarth was thrilled with his team's performance in their 2-0 victory at Wellington on Saturday.

Tom Annear and Ryan Downing scored in either half as the Bickland Park side became the first team to win a Western League game at the Somerset outfit since the middle of October.

Annear opened the scoring in fortuitous fashion midway through the first half when he got on the end of debutant George Newton's cross and fired the ball against the inside of the post, with the ball crossing the line via Tangerines defender Jason Quick.

Downing made the points safe with just under 15 minutes to play when, mere minutes after coming off the bench, he met a lofted pass and planted it past home custodian Harley Wilkinson.

The win extends Town's unbeaten run away from home to three games and sees them move back above Ashton & Backwell United and into eighth spot in the Western League Premier Division.

"They've been on an unbelievable run at home and you can see why they're so strong at home because it's a tough place to play," Westgarth said. "For large periods of the game they caused us a lot of problems and they had a couple of chances but from our point of view it was a really good away performance. 

"We had some half-chances ourselves late in the game and in the second half I thought we were excellent. Going up the slope [at Wellington's ground] is very difficult and I thought we were excellent again. 

"The players that came back made such a difference for us and the guys that stepped in and helped out contributed as well, like George [Newton] did by getting the assist for the first goal."

He continued: "I was so proud of the boys, especially after the run we had when we lost five on the spin. The squad was definitely getting tested and to respond with seven points from nine [is fantastic]. 

"They take it out of you, these sort of games [away from home], and not just physically but mentally too because it's such a long day. It almost felt like a relatively close game, we were back home by nine which felt early.

"It does wonders for you, winning away from home: the bus was bouncing, the confidence was high and it's been a great way to bounce back."

There was a bit of a Truro City theme to Saturday's game, with White Tigers reserve team midfielder George Newton and goalkeeper Morgan Coxhead being drafted into Town's side for the trip to Somerset.

Newton played the majority of what was his first Western League game and capped his debut with an assist for Annear's opener, while Coxhead proved a very useful addition with regular Town stopper Ryan Barnes still suspended, while his understudy Zach Telling is about to become a father.

"I must thank [Truro City reserves manager] John Fabby for helping us out a lot this season," Westgarth said. "We were fortunate enough to have Morgan [in goal on Saturday] and he's played a couple of games for us now. 

"To have George come in as well was great and for a 17-year-old lad he can be really proud of his efforts. On another day he would have scored on his debut but the 'keeper made an unbelievable save."
