Yesterday afternoon (20th), the Falmouth lifeboat crew were assisted by coastguard teams to rescue individuals from a rip current at Maenporth.

Launching at 3.24pm in rough seas, the inshore lifeboat made its way towards the beach.

On scene, it was found that 11 people had been caught in a significant rip current that had developed.

A spokesperson for Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team said:

"Eight persons had been rescued by an off duty member of North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team on a kayak and three further people were bought to shore by a Coastguard Rescue Swimmer.

"Teams remained on scene for some time after monitoring the beach and advising people of the danger."

Falmouth RNLI added:

"If you see a red flag at a lifeguarded beach, do not enter the water, as it is unsafe for any water activities. If there are no flags, there are no lifeguards."
