Today, Nub News visited St Michaels Hotel in Falmouth, to attend a business innovation session led by EPIC (eHealth Productivity and Innovation in Cornwall) with guest speaker Matthew Campbell-Hill.

EPIC, is a three-year collaborative project run by Plymouth University and Creative England to improve the use of technology in health and social care in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Matthew Campbell-Hill is a novel technology and media consultant. However, he has another passion away from medical technology, fencing.

A two-time World Cup Medallist, including as Captain of the GB men's team, Great Britain 2012 Wheelchair Sabre Champion. He is now working towards the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020, after missing out on the Rio Paralympics 2016 through injury.

Matthew Campbell-Hill told Nub News: "I was going for the Rio Paralympics about four years ago, unfortunately, I tore a muscle in my shoulder which took me out. The treatment for it was very slow, I had to have surgery for it which meant I was out in the qualification period.

"Last August I thought I had retired, I went to help the team out with some training and my shoulder felt a whole lot better. It was just a case of, let's see how this goes, I started training with some of the newer ones and I was still on par with them, so I felt I could carry on.

"I was reselected last August for the start of the qualifying period, now we are coming up to the World Championships which is in September in South Korea.

"It is very tight, really I am looking to see if I can get on the team rather than the individual, that requires me to be number two ranked in the country, I am currently ranked number three but only a couple of points off."

Fencing was one of five sports to have UK funding removed in December 2016, which could prove a stumbling block for fencers wanting to make it to Tokyo. Matthew added: "I have zero funding, it is tough and that means I train at the club three days a week and I do some training at home when I am not working.

"I have worked it into what would be my normal physio treatment and regime just to keep me able to work."

Matthew has trained alongside a number of top international fencers at Truro Fencing Club, he commented on the quality of the setup: "Truro is one of the strongest clubs in Europe and that is not the normal Cornwall bravado.

"Truro does have some of the best coaches around the world, trained Olympians and world champions who are training there.

"Truro school is really the place to be in Europe for youngsters to come along and train."
