This evening (6th), Falmouth Marine Conservation will be hosting an event at The Poly to celebrate women working in science.
The event is from 7pm till 9pm, a drinks reception will be followed by a series of talks from women working in different fields in conservation.
Jodie Holyoake from Falmouth Marine Conservation told Nub News:
"Traditionally speaking, women are underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) university courses and occupations. According to UCAS data, only around 35% of STEM students in higher education in the UK are women, which we want to try and change here in Cornwall.
"Falmouth is an epicentre for marine research, with many inspirational women working within this sector. Our Women in Science Evening is a great event to encourage the younger generation to follow a career in science or conservation, no matter what gender they are!"
Falmouth Marine Conservation will be welcoming Katie Bellman, a Research Ranger at Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust and is a leader on seal disturbance research; Katy Davidson, the 'Oyster Lady,' pioneer in oyster culture and seafood specialist; and Heather Buttivant, writer, educator, and lover of Cornish marine life, and winner of the BBC Wildlife Magazine's Wildlife Blogger of the Year.
Jodie added:
"The Falmouth Marine Conservation team is extremely excited to have these three incredible women at our Women in Science Event, particularly as they show just how diverse the marine conservation sector is.
"During the night, we'll also be hearing from local filmmaker and photographer Gemma Wearing who will be showcasing her empowering documentary 'A Wave of Change', celebrating women in science on both a local and international scale. The event was extremely successful last night, and no doubt it will be again in 2020!"
There are still tickets left and you can buy them on the door tonight. Ticket price includes a drink and a pasty.
