Up Close in Falmouth: Local cricket club itching to get back to the game

By Joseph Macey 16th Sep 2021

Falmouth Nub News aims to support our community, promoting shops, businesses, charities, clubs sports groups and more.

We have been profiling some of these businesses and organisations regularly in a feature called 'Up Close in Falmouth'.

This week we spoke to the chairman of Falmouth Cricket Club Mark Averiss on the return of the game, the plans for the season and his tenure as chairman.

Mark has been in his role as chairman for just over a year but has been involved with the club for 30 years, a player, a captain and a vice captain.

"You can only steer a ship as good as your crew and everyone here is fantastic," Mark told Nub News.

After a brief tour of the fantastic facilities, a chat about the history of the club Mark and myself spoke in depth about the club and the plans going forward.

[H3] You said to me when we came in that the club was a sleeping giant, what are your plans for the club to fulfil that potential? [.H2]

It is a giant within sport in Cornwall, we have four Saturday teams, we have a ladies team and junior teams, with all those we have 14 teams and nobody comes close to those numbers. Within Cornwall that is one of the biggest sports clubs within the county.

It is a bit of an unknown, people come for the fireworks but it has such potential for other things. It has a big social area and social space, it can all be hired for various other events, we have a scout troop here, a ladies quilting team, Falmouth Road Runners use it as their base.

We just want to open the doors to the rest of Falmouth and Cornwall really, to say we are here come and have a look. We want the outside space booked for functions, it is there for everyone.

[H3] You have been chairman for a year, what has that year been like for you and the club? [.H2]

I fell into the role during the covid storm, trying to rearrange everything but we have got a good team here and it is positive, everybody that has supported the club in the past has jumped on board with fresh ideas by opening the club up to the community.

Thanks to all the volunteers that have helped us, for me personally it has been busy, it is about finding that time between work getting projects off the ground.

[H3] I guess the target is to get everyone back playing this summer? [.H2]

The cricket leagues are due to start on April 17th, a full program has been issued, junior cricket is set to return, the youngsters, we are looking forward to welcoming back school kids to come along, get outdoors and do some sport.

[H3] So the foundation of the club is all built from those volunteers? [.H2]

Everything is around the people that do the work, 100's of volunteer hours go into maintaining the place all year around.

The grass needs cutting, all the benches need oiling and staining, the leaves need clearing, the gutters need cleaning and people just come up and do it for us.

[H3] What makes the club so unique? And special to you? [.H2]

It is a very unique family at Falmouth Cricket Club, we don't pay people to play here people come to play because they want too because they know how good it is.

Okay, we have had some rough years recently with the first team getting relegated for the first time a few years ago and we are looking to push them back up again but those players stuck together, other teams might have folded but they don't have the family bond we have.

In the junior sections, we get a lot of the parents involved too, a lot of the parents have become players because of bringing their children along. The club makes people enjoy their cricket.

[H3] The players and yourself must be itching to get back on the field? [.H2]

People are chomping at the bit to get going, we need to the ground to dry out a little more then we can get playing and training again.

With that, we have built this social area here just so people can enjoy their time after the match as well. I would just ask people to come and see the place and join in. The door is always open and we are always here for anyone.
