Decision made on new skatepark at Dracaena, Falmouth

By Joseph Macey 16th Sep 2021

The revised application for a new skatepark at the Dracaena Avenue, Falmouth, have been given the nod of approval.

The plans were resubmitted in early February to address the issue of drainage, services easement requirements and on-site parking - but it has now been accepted by Cornwall Council's planning department.

The officer's report read:

"Taking these factors into account, on balance it is considered that the proposal is acceptable, subject to conditions.

"All other matters raised have been taken into account, including the comments of the Council's Tree, Highways, and Environmental Health Officers, and the Town Council, but none is of such significance as to outweigh the considerations that have led to the conclusion."

The plans see a much-needed community facility built following the demolition of the old skatepark.

The revised parking plans incorporate formal parking spaces to replace the informal ones that previously existed on the site, with an increase of spaces from 11 to 12 and a disabled bay.

The new parking plans address the aesthetical improvements as well as on-site safety to cars parking on the approach road verges.

The result of these changes is that the skatepark has been reduced in size but not expected to be noticeable.

In a planning statement, Maverick Industries described it as:

"A vibrant riding community in Cornwall and beyond have been waiting for this for years and the economic benefits this can bring to Falmouth through skate tourism simply cannot be discounted.

"It will be a facility Falmouth will be proud to promote and the potential for the physical wellbeing of its potential users is

undisputed. We commend the design as a beacon of excellence throughout Cornwall."

Falmouth Town Council supported the revised application and recommended approval.
