There has been a big increase in the last 12 months of speeding offences detected on camera in Devon and Cornwall.

In fact, it is one of the biggest increases in the UK according to figures from the RAC Foundation.

The figures come shortly after the news a new bi-directional speed camera was installed in Longdowns.

Devon and Cornwall saw 63,306 speeding offences detected in 2019-2020. There was a 22% increase in 2020-2021 to 77,086 offences.

The RAC Foundation found that one in six offences nationwide were thrown out by police forces last year.

Faulty speed cameras, false number plates, delays in issuing notices, and a lack of resources have all been blamed for the 400,000 cancelled speeding offences nationwide.

Emergency vehicles lawfully breaking the speed limit whilst using blue lights also made up for some of the cases.
