Plans to build flats above a bar in Falmouth look set to go ahead after planning permission was granted.
Submitted by Mark Datson on behalf of owner Mr Nick Sylvester - the plans see the creation of two self-contained flats above Jagos Bar, Webber Hill.
The building as existing is utilised as a public bar on the ground floor with a cellar. The first floor and second-floor act as managers' accommodation to Jagos Bar with direct staircase access down to the bar area.
The work will involve the removal of the direct link between the bar and the upper accommodation by removal of the staircase.
The first floor and second floor will be converted to two self-contained flats with their own independent external access from Webber Hill along and up an existing access ramp to the North Western Elevation of the property leading to an existing external door where a shared entrance lobby will be formed.
No extension work is proposed to allow the conversions but the opportunity will be taken to upgrade the existing second-floor accommodation and strengthen/upgrade the floor construction.
The application reads:
"Due to the close proximity of the building to the centre of Falmouth the most appropriate uses of this site is to remain as a club/bar on ground floor but being a sustainable town centre location create two self-contained flats at first and second-floor level.
"Although there is no parking at the site any occupier can utilise the Quarry Carpark which is only a short walk to the South West.
"The accommodation is also well suited to Students of Cornwall University.
"The alterations have been designed with traditional influence in order to fit in with the local scene and be sympathetic to the surrounding area."
Conditional approval was granted this week (14th) in a notice from Cornwall Council Development Officer Laura Potts.
Falmouth Town Council had recently recommended the application for approval providing "that the materials are in keeping with the Conservation Area."
