The shortlist for the 2020 Community Radio Awards has been revealed - with Source FM's A Space to Speak Your Mind up for a prize in the Community Development Project of the Year category.

In the space of just a year, the show has gone from strength to strength, covering important mental health topics and interviewing local charities.

The show is made in partnership with Cornwall Mind and has received support from Cornwall Rural Community Charity and Cornwall Council.

Source FM's Jerry Padfield who developed the show told Nub News:

"I set the project up as part of my PHD at Falmouth University working alongside Cornwall MIND and I wanted to try and talk about mental health on community radio because I think it is a really important subject and for people of lived experience of mental health because I have my own mental health history.

"It is something we need to have a conversation about and breakdown some taboos - I thought community radio would be a good way of doing that.

"With Cornwall MIND's help and John Gladstone we put out a call for people to participate amongst MIND's users so we were very lucky to get some talented people involved, there is a core of about 8-10 people who help produce the show every week and we have gone from just getting enough content every month to being full of content."

Looking towards the future and approaching the second year of broadcast, Jerry explained the plans for the show adding:

"We have been successful in raising some money for a fundraiser and together with MIND and someone from Source FM we are going to apply to a charity commission to become a CIO which will allow us to apply for bigger funding.

"We are no longer just on Source FM we are also on CHBN in Truro and Radio St Austell Bay so we can expand the amount of Cornwall we are covering in terms of people, topics and news going on in Cornwall, also we might start putting out extra podcasts so we can get more content out."

The awards ceremony is set to take place online from 7pm on December 12th.
