Sewage warning issued for Falmouth waters after heavy rainfall

By Joseph Macey 4th Nov 2021

A sewage warning has been issued for Falmouth following stormy conditions over the last few days.

Recent heavy rain and flooding has caused emergency sewer overflows to be used, resulting in sewage being pumped into the water.

Information is provided by the Environment Agency and published by charity Surfers Against Sewage.

According to the map, sewage has been discharged from an overflow at Gyllyngvase Beach and Swanpool within the past 48 hours.

Surfers Against Sewage said:

"Although no sewer overflows discharge directly onto Gyllyngvase bathing water may be affected by a nearby overflow some 400m to the southwest of the beach. Other discharges into the Fal River may also have an effect here, along with diffuse pollution."

For Swanpool they added:

"Storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours. There is an emergency sewer overflow from the Queen Mary Gardens pumping station that discharges to the sea approximately 420m east of the bathing water."
