Further information has been uncovered regarding the war medal belonging to a serviceman said to be from Falmouth that was found in Lyme Regis.

Bill Nankivell saw the recent article on the war medal belonging to Richard Henry Hocking and did some more digging.

Getting in touch with Nub News, Bill said:

"As previously indicated, records indicate that he was born in Constantine to William James and Elizabeth (nee Cock) Hocking in 1869. No other birth or baptisms for this year show that he was born in Falmouth. What reason he gave Falmouth as his birthplace, we will never know.

"He served in the Royal Navy, at least in Devonport, Plymouth and probably ended his service as a Chief Petty Officer Stoker.

"In the 1901 census, he is married to Esther (maiden name unknown) and has two sons, Harry G (born 1895) and Edwin C (born 1899). As would have been normal, Richard would probably have left his war medal to his eldest son Harry.

"Harry married a Lilian Boundy in St Austell in 1919 and it is probable that they lived in or around Truro as this is where Lilian passed away in 1948.

"Harry passed away in Bridport in 1958 at the age of 63. This would explain why the medal ended up in Dorset, but no reason as to why he moved there.

"I could not find any descendants. His brother Edwin C married Gwendoline M Lear in Truro in 1920 and they had three children; Reginald T D (B 1921), Peggy L M (B 1922), Reginald Desmond (B 1925), Reginald married a Daisy E Chappell, in Gosport, Hampshire in 1943 (possibly a Naval connection here).

"They had a son Leonard, born in Penzance in 1945. Leonard married Marlene D Risden in Redruth in 1966 and had three children: Scott Alistair (B 1967), Andrea Dawn (B 1968) and Richard Clive (B 1969)."

Bill has since joined a local community chat group and has asked if anyone can locate the Hockings from Redruth.
