Mayors column: Events over the past week, call for more vaccination centres and Christmas lights
In a regular feature, your mayors provide an update on the things going on at the Town Council.
Mayors will be addressing the community weekly writing about what they have been up to, their committees/meetings, and any issues/news affecting residents in the town.
This is what Steve Eva said about the events over the past week and going forward...
Mayor Steve Eva
Over the last few weeks, I have attended several events including laying wreaths at Kimberley Park, The Pier, and Trebah Gardens on behalf of the town and laid a cross on the first poppy day for the remembrance period.
I have visited St Austell and Newquay for their Mayor Making and the Eden Project for the launch of this year's Christmas Market.
As an ex Navy serviceman I attended Trafalgar Night at the Greenbank Hotel along with others from the Royal Navy Association.
Other events included the opening of the golf club's new path down to Swanpool also meetings with Falmouth School, Marlborough School, and King Charles School. I also attended a special church service to remember those lost during the Covid period. As you are aware we have been fighting the closure of Ships & Castles over the last two months. We held a debate with a scout group in Penryn which was an excellent debate with some great feedback to use in our fight. We have had our Christmas Lights switch-on on the Moor and also the Christmas tree light switch on at the Princess Pavilion both extremely well attended and both nights so well organised by Richard Gates and Henrietta and Jacqui. Thank you all for your efforts. We have had a number of drop-in vaccination centres in Falmouth but nowhere near enough of them. With numbers high hopefully, this will change now it's been reported that Falmouth has such high numbers. We have six schools in Falmouth which have been the reason for them being so high. Big shout out to Falmouth Town Football Club who remain unbeaten in the league this season. They have won every game lead of course by their Manager Andrew Westgarth. I continue to walk about the town two or three times a week and meet the shop keepers and shoppers and there are always things to learn.Along with all this I sit on the Planning, Licensing, Finance and General, Staffing Committees along with the Princess Pavilion working party so you can see it quite time-consuming being the Mayor but no complaints I really enjoy the role.
This weekend is our Festive Weekend so come down and enjoy all that's on offer. Please remember to wear masks in shops and crowded areas and stay safe.
