Major work is to get underway in Penryn early next month closing the main route through town.

Lower Market Street is expected to be closed from the 8th February until the 11th for BT to gain underground network access - with a diversion in place.

The closure will be in force between the hours of 19:00 and 06:00 on a daily basis, weekdays only.

Cornwall Council is to prohibit traffic over an area of highway, Lower Market Street, Penryn between the junctions of Saracen Place and Higher Market Street (as highlighted in red).

The council will also temporarily suspend the existing one-way order of the junction at St Thomas Street and its junction with Saracen Place (as highlighted in yellow on the map).

Kevin Bryant, Head of Highways and Infrastructure at Cornwall Council said:

"The council is satisfied that the order is needed because works are being executed on or near the road to carry out cabling works.

"Nothing in this order will apply to emergency services, buses, cyclists and traffic associated with the works required within the highway.

"Any vehicle being used for the purposes of an undertaker in an emergency, such as loss of utility supplies and anything done with the permission of or at the discretion of a police officer.

"Pedestrian and vehicular access to residents and businesses will be maintained."
