A pub landlord in Falmouth has described how their faith in humanity has been restored after members of the community came together to recoup money stolen from a charity pot on their premises.

Jay and Victoria Watkinson run Oddfellows Arms on Quay Hill and have been raising money for a Cystic Fibrosis charity as a friend's daughter was diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder.

As the couple were on holiday in France they received the awful news that not only had their friend's daughter sadly passed away but someone had also entered the pub and stolen the charity pot that had around £800 in it.

The burglary took place at around 8 am on Saturday 22 July. The doors were open as the pub was expecting deliveries and a member of the team was on the second floor.

Although the pub has CCTV the police have yet been able to identify the culprit. Although Jay speculated it may be the same person that robbed their till at the end of last year. However, Jay made it clear this was complete speculation and he has no evidence to back that up.

The charity pot was found smashed up between Well Lane and New Street with just bits of loose change left.

Despite being in complete shock and struggling to understand how someone could steal money being raised for dying children, their faith in humanity was restored when their loyal locals came together to try and raise some more money.

Jay told Nub News that one of their locals was determined to 'Turn this negative into a positive' and after some huge donations from the community, the pub has raised almost double the original amount.

Reflecting on the situation Jay said it was amazing how so many nice people have repaired the damage of just one bad person.

Victoria has been a landlord at the pub for almost 30 years and was even Britain's youngest landlady at just 21 but now the couple has said they will not be as trusting and will be upping the security.

If you would like to donate you can either go down to Oddfellows and pass on your support or visit the Cystic Fibrosis Trust Homepage.
