In conversation with Falmouth's Tidal Coffee on the business, reopening and what makes good coffee

By Joseph Macey 16th Sep 2021

"Once people have tried the coffee they usually come back."

Dan Hemingway was travelling went covid forced him to return home, he moved down to Falmouth back in July 2020 and has stayed ever since.

He was going to get rid of an old horse trailer before deciding to make it the home for Tidal Coffee.

"Day by day I was converting the trailer I was thinking of business ideas and it all came together last minute, I was down here (Gylly) within a few days of finishing the renovation," Dan told Nub News.

After a hectic year getting settled, figuring out what works, and what times to be open, Dan has found his feet and a regular spot next to Gyllyngvase Beach reopening a few weeks ago.

So what makes a good cup of coffee? Dan continued:

"The beans I use are not widely used in Cornwall, I am not aware of anyone else that uses them so they are quite a speciality.

"The way we roast them and the way we make espressos is very different, you don't get nearly as much espresso in a cup but it is a lot stronger and there are a lot more coffee grounds before you pass the coffee through, I think it just stands out from the crowd.

"We get some really good feedback and some people say it is the best coffee in Falmouth, coffee is one of those things where it is personal preference but ours suits a lot of pallets."

At the start, it was mainly just coffee but Dan has now reached out into homemade cakes which he will keep expanding to give people more variety, also offering tea, snacks and cold drinks.

Tidal Coffee is in an ideal location just to the side of Queen Mary Gardens, he added:

"It is such a beautiful beach, you catch a lot of people walking through and even if it is quiet it is a really nice spot to look out."

Tidal Coffee is open 7 days a week 10am-2pm.
