Recent electrical work in Falmouth High Street has raised concerns from business owners who feel it is affecting the community negatively.

Writing on Facebook yesterday, Wilko manager, Lewis Nichols said:

"Well it's only a couple of hours in and the road outside of Wilko is absolutely chaotic already.

"People stopping in the road, people trying to turn around and the security guys have already lost control of it. Day 1 is off to a good start. This system may need to be reviewed if it carries on."

The work, due to take place until 27th March, aims to provide a complete upgrade to the current electrical system in Falmouth town centre, which has seen power outages in the past.

In order to provide support to businesses, the council have revealed they will be hosting free parking every Saturday in their car parks during the work.

Richard Gates, Town Manager, told Nub News:

"The free parking is to support the businesses and the local community while the next phase of the electrical works are taking place within the town.

"It is funded by Falmouth Town Council and Falmouth BID, and is applicable in all Falmouth Cornwall Council-owned car parks. This will run from Saturday 11th January to Saturday 21st March."

This scheme has not been received well from everybody, with some business owners feeling like it is not enough.

Louise Starkey, owner of De Wynns, told Nub News:

"My opinion is that it doesn't help at all and alot of businesses in town are worried for their future.

"It would be more helpful to the town if the council offered business owners a rates reduction whilst the works are going on to keep them in business.

"They clearly realise the impact the works have on the town and that is why they are offering the free parking but that doesn't work for reasons I have explained before."

The work is taking place in Market Street, Church and Arwenack Streets and Grove Place.
