On Saturday 28th September, Extinction Rebellion Cornwall held a climate change action on Perranporth beach.
Rebels assembled on Perranporth from to highlight how by 2030 the Perranporth beach car park will be covered in water due to sea level rises.
Organised by the Porthtowan XR Group, this action aimed to highlight the very immediate implications of the Cornish beaches being lost as a result of climate change.
This 'Deckchair Disaster' scene was gradually submerged by the extra high tide to highlight the issue of rising sea levels. Their newspapers had headlines related to climate change.
I caught up with a press contact from the event, Lucy Cokes, she said: "Originally it was actually planned for the summer but we couldn't get permission from the council because it is a private beach so they wouldn't have been allowed to film it, it was meant to be more of a seaside thing and we were going to have all of the holidaymakers there but we had to delay it because it had to be timed around the spring tide.
"Instead it was actually very different because we didn't have that many spectators as it was raining very hard, so not many people came to watch.
"The actual spectacle was more dramatic because of the storm and the rain, in terms of our coverage I think it has gone really well."
However, some of the comments following the action labelled the group "clueless idiots" and "unemployed". Lucy Cokes, added: "There is always comments about people being unemployed, people being unwashed, all of those ridiculous things that go on.
"We just explain why you are doing it, we don't really engage too much in responding and just get on with it."
Porthtowan XR has no events coming up, as all focus will be on the big London protest: "The focus right now is on getting to London, that starts on the 6th October, and the opening ceremony is on Sunday night and lots of people from Cornwall are going up, XR has got their own buses laid on to take people there and back, and I think there are about 52 people from our local area who are signed up to go to London."
The next local XR meeting is 'Not A Harvest Festival' which is on Thursday evening at All Saints Church, Truro.
The programme for the evening will involve short talks by Manda Brookman, Luci Isaacson, and Jeremy Putnam, with a panel discussion about the climate crisis here in Cornwall.
The evening will also include a spirited mix of arts (poetry and readings) and planning future actions.
