Cherilyn Mackrory spoke in parliament yesterday on behalf of the oystermen in Falmouth as they seek a resolution to the shellfish import ban.
Recently, the EU told British fishermen they are indefinitely banned from selling live mussels, oysters, clams, cockles and scallops to its member states.
This is proving costly for oyster and shellfish workers in Truro and Falmouth with many likely to lose their jobs due to the ban - unless something can be worked out.
In parliament yesterday afternoon, Truro and Falmouth MP Cherilyn Mackrory said:
"I thank my right honourable friend for the work he is doing to resolve this matter and I would like to reiterate it is vital that the cash assistance reaches not only shellfish exporters affected but also the small boats on the Fal Estuary who are currently tied up and facing serious difficulties.
"Also what assessment does my right honourable friend make of the opinion from some in the industry that their French market was intact and profitable despite restaurants in France being closed in November and December, but is now non-existent and adding to the current issues."
Secretary of State for the Environment, George Eustice replied:
"I know my friend and my neighbouring MP does have a very important oyster fishery in the Fal and I have been on board one of those vessels and seen first hand the work that they do.
"We are working very hard to get this issue resolved, I think there will be a good future for our fishing industry once we can resolve these particular issues."
