Gender Equality festival to begin in Falmouth

Today signals the start of Benow Festival 2020, the theme this year is Gender Equality.

This is a festival of events, ideas, art, community and activism to explore and celebrate the culture of women. Everyone is welcome.

Sara Baistrocchi, community engagement coordinator for Falmouth Cultural Services, told Nub News:

"Benow is the Cornish word for Female, the 8th of March is international women's day so we are putting on activities and talks related to that.

"For everything, men are welcome as well, especially as this year the theme is gender equality so it is important than men are involved in the discussion.

"There are drop-in workshops and activities especially on Sunday, we are offering some screenprinting and make t-shirts with slogans on them.

"There will be a dance workshop on Thursday and Sunday, a creative writing workshop, those are practical things but we also have lots of talks happening during the festival."

Hosted in the Falmouth Art Gallery and Falmouth Library, over the four days will be various things going on.

Today (4th) the main event is a film screening of 'On the Basis of Sex' followed by a debate from 7:00pm-9:00pm.

Thursday (5th) will see a Gong Bath from 6:00pm-8:00pm, an introduction to Gong Consciousness and the holistic benefits of sound with Cassandra Brown and Jason Easterling.

Friday (6th) will see a talk called 'Women in Our Collection'. The Collection Manager for a fascinating journey through Falmouth Art Gallery collection and discover the secrets of the women in it, as artists and subjects.

There will also be a drop-in open discussion from 1:00pm-3:00pm with therapists from the Inspiring Health Clinic. Meet some of the team from Inspiring Health Clinic Falmouth, a multidisciplinary Natural health clinic.

Saturday (7th) sees a Joyfal Project : Postcard Making – Drop in Workshop, from 2:00pm-4:00pm in the Falmouth Library Foyer.

Create a collection of personalised postcards for the International Women's Day Festival at the Library.

Gender Equality Story Telling – Story Telling for Kids, 11:00am-12:30pm at Falmouth Library.

A Children's storytelling session focusing on Gender Equality.

Relax, Release and Reiki, 11:00am-12:30pm in Falmouth Library.

Explore how to let go of negative chatter, anxious feelings and release any tension or stress.

The final day of the festival on Sunday, a talk on Community and the Illusion of Separation with Anna Lempriere from 3:00pm-5:00pm.

Gender Equality in Creative Sectors – Round Table Discussion 5:30pm-7:30pm.

A talk about under-represented women in some art and craft sectors. With Amy Goodwin, Matt Ashdown and Amy Laurence.
