The search and rescue team will be on standby tonight for the start of Storm Eunice.

The local search and rescue team will be on standby as Storm Eunice rolls in.

The Met Office has issued a rare red warning for Cornwall on Friday (18th) expected to cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions due to extremely strong winds between 7am-12pm

The Red Weather Warning for wind covers southwest coastal areas of the UK, where the most significant gusts in exposed areas could be in excess of 90mph from early Friday morning.

Further inland and within the wider Amber Warning area, gusts will still be significant and damaging for many, with 70-80mph gusts possible.

The search and rescue team said they will be on standby this evening in response to the forecast Storm Eunice.

They posted on social media:

"We will be ready to respond from our base near St Day, to assist the community of West Cornwall at the direction of Devon & Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Cornwall Fire, and Rescue Service, and Cornwall Council.

"We ask people to follow the advice of the Met Office, with a RED weather warning in place from 3am-9pm tomorrow.

"Storm Eunice may cause significant disruption due to extremely strong winds on Friday."

What to expect

  • There is a good chance that flying debris could result in a danger to life.
  • Damage to buildings and homes is likely, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down.
  • Roads, bridges, and railway lines are likely to close, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services, and flights.
  • There is a good chance that power cuts, possibly prolonged, could occur and possibly affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.
  • Large waves are likely and beach material is likely to be thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties.
  • It is likely there will be falling branches and some uprooted trees.
