Falmouth University responds to concerns over 'packed' and 'unsafe' buses
Falmouth University has responded to the concerns made from residents about the reportedly 'unsafe' and 'packed' buses.
In a report by Nub News last week residents were speaking out about the lack of social distancing on buses passing through the University campus and beyond.
Vince Curtis, a Falmouth resident, has complained about the lack of social distancing after experiencing a packed bus ride through the University.
He described 'social distancing going out the window' when the bus arrived at campus.
Vince previously told Nub News:
"For months Cornwall has been observing social distancing rule and as a result we live in one of the safest places in the country.
"Now with cases on the rise, it was awful to see the lack of social distancing among students on the bus last Saturday."
The University has now spoken exclusively to Falmouth Nub News about the issue.
A spokesperson told us: "Falmouth and Exeter Universities care deeply about the health and wellbeing of the communities, both on and off campus.
"We have and remain in regular contact with both students and staff to relay the latest Government information and guidelines, as well as remind them of the necessity to follow the rules fully.
"These regular communications are underpinned by our Cornwall Campuses Community Charter, which sets out the expectations by which we ask everyone to demonstrate the highest standards of behaviour, thoughtfulness, and consideration to all members of the community.
"As such, students are required and expected to adhere to Government laws and guidelines on COVID-19."
The Falmouth transport company have told residents that drivers are not responsible for social distancing on their buses.
Much confusion has been met with the response from the bus company as they stated that 'student transport is exempt and can be fully seated loads'.
It has not been made clear if the U1, U2 and U4 buses are in fact exclusively for students, as other residents continue to ride them.
Vince Curtis, Falmouth resident, added: "I don't know how else passengers other than students are expected to catch a bus from Falmouth to Truro, Redruth or Penzance unless I'm missing something."
Falmouth Nub News has approached First Kernow for a comment.
