On Friday 29th April after school, a group of children and their parents were greeted at the Princess Pavilion by the mayor of Falmouth, Steve Eva, and members of the Falmouth St Piran's Day committee.

The Children's Art Competition has been held as part of our St Piran's Day event right from the start. Normally the judging has been done in advance of the day and the prizes given out during the celebration. However, due to various circumstances beyond our control, this year things didn't quite go according to plan and we had to delay the prize-giving.

Local artist Jamie Medlin judged all of the work for us and as well as their prizes all the children received a print of one of his paintings, which he kindly donated. After being suitably refreshed with squash and saffron cake, to open the event everyone danced the Falmouth Furry (the music and dance used for the SPD parade in Falmouth) around the bandstand area; this was followed by a couple more traditional Cornish dances.

We then moved up onto the bandstand, where the story of St Piran's arrival in Cornwall was read in English and Cornish. Finally, the Mayor presented the prizes to the children who were there.

Those who couldn't make it will receive their prizes at school. After a round of applause and a final 'oggy, oggy, oggy, oy, oy, oy!' everyone departed.

The committee would like to thank: all the children who entered, the parents, grandparents, schools who supported them, Jamie Medlin for judging the entries, Mayor Steve Eva for presenting the prizes, and the Princess Pavilion for providing the venue.
