Falmouth Soundwaves: The new show on Source FM produced by university students

By Joseph Macey 16th Sep 2021

There's been a new show on Source FM for a month now produced solely by Falmouth University Journalism students.

Falmouth Soundwaves covers news and feature stories of interest to a local audience in Falmouth and Penryn.

They are looking not just at the effect of COVID-19 but beyond the virus to local people who are making a difference in the lives of those around them.

Talking to local politicians, business owners, sports stars, artists and musicians – anyone in the area with a story to tell.

Each week the presenters also choose a piece of music that resonates with them personally.

So far this segment has looked at the power of music in overcoming mental health issues and its role in Black Lives Matter.

Kevin Bishop, Lecturer told Nub News:

"Production of the bulletin is within COVID guidelines with half of the students in the Falmouth Campus newsroom, the other half reporting on location.

"The presenters and studio manager are all in masks but it doesn't muffle their enthusiasm to tell the stories of the week.

"It's proving a very popular module with more stories coming out of the students each week than we can fit into the running order. They're learning tough but valuable lessons in editing down their stories to fit into the allocated time."

Social media producer for the show Jack Paull added:

"I have been a presenter, been a reporter and I have done the social media so I have had a good grasp on every aspect of the show.

"Considering the circumstances, everyone has managed to produce some really interesting stories and we have produced a really good show.

"It is our third year now so when we graduate we will be wanting to go straight into employment, I feel like it is equipping us really well going into the future."
