Falmouth School to get new community bike track after planning approval

Local News by Joseph Macey 26th Nov 2021

Falmouth School has been given the go-ahead for a new multi-purpose bike track after plans were approved.

The proposal is to develop a 500m multi-purpose track that includes jumps, tabletops, rollers, and berms. The track will be built in current unused woodland at the bottom of one of the Falmouth School fields and will feature as an 'outdoor zone' where cycling will be the main feature of the area.

The school says that the aim of the project will be to provide opportunities for the community of Falmouth within cycling that they don't currently have.

The track will be based at Falmouth School and will be used by students during curriculum time.

There will be many extra-curricular opportunities within cycling that will also be provided to engage 11-18-year-olds at the school with the sport of cycling and inspire them to cycle outside of school through community clubs including Dirt Bike School and Carrick Riders.

The cycle track will comprise around 500m of multi-purpose bike trail featuring banked turns, roller features, and tabletops.

The trail will be 1.5m wide to allow room for students to pass each other safely. In addition to the trail, there will also be a 6m x 6m stoned surface resting area in order for users to maintain a safe distance when waiting.

In addition to the community using the track through Carrick Riders, Dirt Bike school, the Dracena Centre and through extra-curricular school clubs. The track would also be offered to five feeder primary schools for use at available times during the school day and after school to introduce the sport to young riders.

The project will also allow for the purchasing and storage of 30 mountain bikes and helmets and suitable storage to keep the bikes safe, secure and well maintained to achieve longevity. A range of sizes will be purchased to ensure all riders from across the community groups would have access to a bike.

The application continues:

"When targeting riders/participants from more deprived areas of Falmouth, having bikes available will help break down a massive barrier that exists for many people as they can't afford a bike of their own."

Last week, Falmouth School got their permission to start work on the new track after Cornwall Council granted conditional approval.

Falmouth Town Council also backed the plans subject to restrictions on noise and light pollution in the evenings.
