Rail improvements could be on the horizon in Falmouth as the town was eyed up in the latest spending review.

The government set out an ambitious plan yesterday that focuses on levelling up across the country, investing in vital infrastructure that will ensure the UK builds back better from coronavirus.

Funding has been earmarked for several South West projects – most notably the announcement of £7.8million for a new railway station at Edginswell, Torquay.

Five schemes in the region will each receive £50,000 in feasibility funding via the Ideas Fund, part of the Restoring Your Railway Fund.

These include proposals to improve rail services from Falmouth, open a station in the Langport/Somerton area, restore services between Swanage and Wareham, reopen St Anne's Park station in Bristol and reinstate rail access to Cirencester.

Truro and Falmouth MP Cherilyn Mackrory said:

"While the health emergency facing our country is not yet over, the economic emergency has only just begun.

"The Chancellor's Spending Review tackles this unprecedented situation head-on – ensuring lives and livelihoods in Truro and Falmouth are protected and supported in the weeks and months ahead.

"At the same time, I was elected at last year's General Election on a commitment to level up communities like ours, and I am thrilled that this Conservative Government is now making good on that promise – by delivering a once-in-a-generation investment in infrastructure that will create jobs, grow the economy and increase pride in the place we call home.

"I was particularly pleased to see a project which I have backed in our constituency on rail restoration receive funding in the Spending Review, as well as money for Cornwall to assist in tree planting."
