Falmouth pub owner speaks following ban on takeaway alcohol

New lockdown restrictions will come into effect from this Thursday and it looks as if the takeaway sales of alcohol will be restricted.

The second lockdown will be even harder for those in the hospitality industry, although deliveries and takeaways will be allowed, sales of alcohol won't be permitted.

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) is calling for this restriction to be lifted.

Now, the owner of The Moth & The Moon has responded to the decision saying businesses could be thrown into "jeopardy" if the ban is put in place.

Many pubs in Falmouth and Penryn turned to takeaway sales to keep their businesses alive, including The Seven Stars and cocktail deliveries from One For The Road.

In early June, Moth & Moon opened up 'The Moth Licence' selling beers and ciders through a window at the premises.

Moth & Moon's Matt Reay told Nub News:

"I assume along with every other independent pub, bar, restaurant, off-licence, and brewery that is affected by the addition of the 'no takeaway alcohol' statement on the government website for this coming lockdown.

"We're waiting with bated breath that there are clarification and amendments as to what that means exactly and hopefully that outcome will mean genuine off-sales (as opposed to "there's a plastic pint glass full of lager to drink here on the street!") will be allowed.

"If this doesn't happen then supermarkets will clean up and many independent local businesses and people's livelihoods will be put in jeopardy for no good reason."

SIBA held discussions with ministers and departments over the weekend to clarify certain points of the measures.

More updates on the situation as we get them.
