Falmouth paddleboard centre searching for solutions after beach fire debris found outside shop

By Joseph Macey 16th Sep 2021

WeSUP Paddleboard Centre, at Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, has been left scratching heads looking for solutions to continuous beach fires.

WeSup fired the warning after debris was found this morning directly outside of the business at Gylly Beach.

"The majority might not know better, and very few are malicious enough to deliberately leave remnants of debris for the early risers to deal with. Yet once again we woke up this morning to open the shop and found large pieces of wood, nails and charcoal directly outside of WeSUP," WeSUP said.

"We find ourselves caught in the middle of an unsolvable problem without a chance to speak directly to the people having these fires. Leaving us lost in the dark and hearing the same discussions from the same people.

"Despite best intentions, nothing is getting done. As a business directly affected by these fires we are running out of options."

WeSUP described feeling "let down" as they also recently saw their board rack broken into pieces.

WeSUP has suggested that the solution should be no fires at Gylly Beach, with Jayne Kirkham, Cornwall Councillor for Falmouth Smithick saying:

"Beach fires on Gyllyngvase beach are becoming a real issue.

"There are by-laws against lighting fires on beaches and unattended fires are a real safety risk as there are buildings on the beach. Please don't light fires on Gylly."

The paddleboard centre opened up the conversation to the community on social media to "bring a new light on the beach fire issue."

WeSUP added:

"Our business, like many other tourist dependant industries, are reliant on a small group of hard-working humans giving their all each and every day. To be put at risk by a small group of ignorant beach users is not acceptable to us. Our staff, customers and equipment should not have to deal with another person lack of forethought."
