A mum-of-two who works in the Council's Together for Families service is about to cycle the length of the country to raise money for a charity that helped her son.

Heather Williams who lives in Falmouth, will start her journey on Friday the 26th of May, to embark on a 1,000-mile ride from Land's End to John O'Groats.

She is taking on the challenge in support of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) which helped her son Olly when he was born with a complete unilateral cleft lip and palate 15 years ago.

The experience inspired her to go on and work with children and families with different needs and she is now a deputy team leader with the Early Years Inclusion and SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) team.

Heather, deputy officer for Early Years Inclusion and SEND told the council of her story, she said: "Soon after Olly was born I vowed to raise money for this incredible charity that supported us through some tough times and here I am, still keeping that promise.

"The positive and supportive journey that we experienced with Olly ignited a fire and led me to the career that I am in today, offering support to children, childcare providers, and families with a plethora of differences.

"I want everyone to experience the resources, support, and care that we have been fortunate enough to receive, whatever their need."

Heather also added that they had encountered some amazing people and professionals on their journey.

Olly when he was born

From the start, they needed expert support with feeding as babies with a cleft require specialist feeding bottles and teats.

Then over the years Olly has also needed help with his speech, language, and hearing, and underwent several operations.

Heather reflected on the experience, she said: "It's been a journey with many ups and downs and we have stories that will make you smile, laugh and cry. But at the end of the day, we have a son who is happy, healthy, and about to sit his GCSEs.

"Should you wish to support me with raising funds for this fantastic charity that is very close to our hearts then please visit our Just Giving page. Every penny counts and your support will get me up the many hills!"
