Falmouth McDonald's extension will cause further problems with traffic

By Joseph Macey 13th Jan 2022

Falmouth McDonald's have been urged to seek a bigger site after concerns were raised over their plans to extend their restaurant on Dracaena Avenue.

McDonald's had applied to make alterations to elevations to include two extensions with aluminium cladding. The relocation of the entrance door with a new shopfront and new access door.

However, this was met with some worry by the Town Council's planning committee on Monday night (10th) recommending refusal on highway grounds.

The planning committee members stated that traffic is already hectic on Dracaena Avenue and the roundabout – especially in peak hours causes dangerous situations.

Councillor Steve Eva commented:

"I just don't think there is room for an extension there. You go across there in the summer around teatime the main road is blocked off. By extending the restaurant you are just increasing traffic which would therefore block the road off even further.

"I think the area has got a big enough site already and extending it is wrong. They really should be looking for a bigger area if they want to extend."

Councillor Jayne Kirkham followed up by saying "something should be done" about the McDonald's traffic.

She added:

"It is something that needs to be dealt with. If we accepted the extension, we would be making that problem even larger."

Falmouth Town Council voted to recommend refusal of the application on highway grounds.
