A Falmouth coffee house bid to secure an alcohol licence took a positive step as they look to start serving dinner in the evenings.

Run by brother and sister duo Hugo and Pixie, "Planted" situated on Church Street, opened at the start of January.

The cafe is unique as customers can enjoy their coffee surrounded by plants that run through the building.

Hugo Horlick explained the plans this week at a meeting of the Falmouth Town Council licensing committee.

He said:

"At the moment we are only trading up until about 4pm serving breakfast, lunch, teas, and coffees. We are quite a small planted-based cafe with 18 seats.

"We were hoping to be able to do dinner in the evenings and we thought people who are coming would like to have a drink with their meal including wine, beer, and cocktails."

Hugo also added they hope to use part of the cafe for a deli, offering products such as Cornish wines, and cheeses.

However, there were some concerns as the cafe is based in an Cumulative Impact Zone - with Church Street regularly experiencing crime, disorder, public safety, and public nuisance.

Councillor Steve Eva said:

"The problem might be if someone has had too much to drink and they know you have an off-sales licence. They might come in and get beer or wine to take out. What I'm trying to get to is that you'd be responsible enough for who you serve to take the alcohol out."

He added:

"I believe the Cumulative Impact Zone wasn't put there for this kind of application. It was made for pubs and clubs to open up on that street.

"The owners sound very reasonable and they want to run a sensible business. Considering Cornwall Council has granted the same licence to a business nearby - I would be supportive of this application."

The committee voted to support the application - which will now go before Cornwall Council.
